A Regional Blueprint for New Orleans’ Future

After an engagement to strengthen the core of the organization, New Orleans & Company began to look outwards to inform its new vision. With new leadership at the helm, the organization engaged Trepwise to conduct an assessment of the progress of Greater New Orleans as a destination from the 2009 Tourism Master Plan.

Solution

Through quantitative and qualitative research, a study of comparative global destinations, and consultations with tourism experts, the assessment brought to light a number of factors hindering New Orleans as a destination that deeply affect residents, businesses, and visitors (e.g. unreliable transit, flooding and heat, economic factors, and more).

As a result, NOCO committed to bringing partners and community together to build a vision plan to address these root issues and make New Orleans a better place to live, learn, work, and visit.



Results

Trepwise served as the planning partner to facilitate and build Vision 2035, a regional plan aimed at systems change. In collaboration with a steering committee of influential public and nonprofit leaders, the plan is has engaged hundreds of stakeholders, including businesses, nonprofit leaders, and residents, to define ten leverage points and targeted action-oriented interventions to enhance quality of life in Greater New Orleans.

Now in it implementation phase, the plan is leveraging cross-parish and cross-sector collaboration to target workforce development, small business and entrepreneurial support, cultural sustainability, transportation connectivity, and more. Impacts to-date include:

  • 70+ interviews with leaders, nonprofits, employers, city departments
  • 5 roundtable sessions with nonprofit leaders and employers
  • 120+ community members engaged via 3 community sessions
  • 20+ vision and master plans researched and incorporated into the planning process
  • 10 leverage points for ten years to improve quality of life
